For an truly exceptional family day out, visit the World Heritage Site of Stonehenge. These ancient stones are located near the small Ancient town of Amesbury in the rolling hills of the West Wiltshire countryside.
The true meaning of this ancient, awe-inspiring fromation has been lost in the mists of time. Was Stonehenge a temple for solar veneration, a hub forritual healing, a burial site or perhaps a huge lunar calendar? One of the great mysteries is how the stones got here. How did our ancestors manage to move these immense stones from so far away and then, using only rudimentary hand tools, construct and position this astonishing structure?
The Stonehenge Complex is owned by English heritage and provides a number of addtional facilities including Audio Tour devices in a variety of languages, Gift shop with unique souvenirs and literature. Toilet facilites and refreshments are also on-site.
Avebury Stone Circle - Avebury rivals, or even exceeds the henge as the largest, most spectacular and complex prehistoric site in Britain. Built and adapted over centuries from about 2850 BC to 2200 BC, it now appears as a vast circular bank and ditch, surrounding an area of 280 acres square. Within this 'henge' ditch is an innermost ring of substantially proportioned standing stones, enclosing two more stone circles, each with a central feature.
Avebury is part of a broader nexus of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments. Within walking distance of Avebury you'll find the impressive Silbury Hill, the largest man made mound in the Europe and on a scale with the Egyptian pyramids and West Kennet long Barrow, one of the largest, most impressive Neolithic chambered tombs in Britain.
